Top 20 Songs That Embody DMV (DC Soundtrack)

Promotional%2520poster%2520for%2520RFK%2520Stadium%2520Back%2520To%2520School%2520Concert Da DMVFROM THE DESK OF MR. LUCRACK:
This has been the most challenging “Top” list yet. We could have easily made it top 50. This playlist is made up of songs that embody the spirit of DC. No genres have been excluded, but as you may imagine, this list is Go-Go heavy and may truly include some of the best known unknowns ever. Here we go:
1.) It Don’t Mean a Thing by Chuck Brown- Hey, what can I say, the Godfather is a beast. Don’t even know if this is even considered a real song, but nonetheless, this catchy tune just oozes DC. Everybody knows someone that lives by the motto, “If it ain’t from the city, it ain’t right.”
2.) Living for the City by Stevie Wonder- This theme song for the movie New Jack City epitomizes DC, especially with the cost of living the way it is…Just feels like you are living just enough.
3.) Sardines (and Pork & Beans) by Junkyard Band- For anyone not from the area that went to college on the east coast after ‘85, this was more than likely their introduction to Go-Go. People from the city will tell you that this is an actual meal when times are tight. This song was actually released on Def Jam with “The Word” and produced by legendary producer Rick Rubin.

junkyard Da DMV

4.) What’s Going On? by Marvin Gaye- It’s as though Marvin, a DC native, was sitting in the park near 58th St., which was subsequently named in his honor, when he wrote this song. It could also be the theme song for the entire Black History Month.
5.) Rock Creek Park by The Blackbyrds – Anybody who had wheels at 16 with limited funds knew about doing it in the park, although the fun usually only lasted for a short period of time before you were chased off by those pesky park police.
6.) Lock It by R.E.- This timeless classic by the wickedest band is always a favorite. When this jam was new, it was always interesting to see the peeps “re-mixing” their own version of the Lock it.
7.) Tha Water by Northeast Groovers- This original groove screams DC. One of the very few Congo solos you could actually dance to. “Smoke you all by yourself” was great. Not to be confused with the DJ Flex sampled song “Water Dance” which became a college scene hit. BTW, was there an actual “Water Dance”?
8.) DA Butt by Experience Unlimited- This definitely may have been the second Go-Go song introduced to folks not from the area. Grammy award nominated but those not in the know do not even recognize this as Go-Go. It would take you only 20 minutes of walking around downtown DC shortly after the weather breaks to realize it is all about Da Butt in DC.

a0065861 Da DMV 9.) Run Joe by Chuck Brown- If you are in your mid 30’s, then this was probably your first record – this and that Sugar Hill Gang joint. Everybody knew somebody that could qualify as Moe or Joe…This song could be the reason why everybody is called Joe.

10.) Ruff it Off by Junkyard Band- No summary needed here…If this ain’t the classic DC attitude, I don’t know what is. “Weak bamas lost cuz we ruffed ‘em off.”
11.) Pusher Man by Curtis Mayfield- Ha! If you at one time or another enjoyed or partook in the sticky, then you know why this song is in the list. DC probably has more pusher men per capita than most major urban areas.
12.) Stone Cold Hustler by DC Scorpio- Hey, the names says it all. As far as another song by Scorpio, I couldn’t name one, but when it was good in the city it was good. When you were a youngin’ listenening to this song, you wanted everything he named in this song.

R 224872 1112046186 Da DMV 13.) Bustin’ Loose by Chuck Brown- Early Chuck, which released nationwide and did well, it was one of the first Go-Go songs where the horns were prominent. Thanks for all you do, Godfather. Da DMV14.) Go Hard by Junkyard- HA! How many times have you gone to a friend for advice, on a given matter, and all they could come up with is look you in the eye and shrug their shoulders and simply say, “Go Hard”…Only in DC.

15.) Work the Walls by Rare Essence- If you were coming up when this song was first dropped by R.E., you would sit in front of the TV all day watching the jukebox hoping someone would order it. This song makes you think of all those asses you walked up on in the Go-Go and freaked all night.
16.) Wind me Up Chuck/Funk- I guess you could credit this song to Chuck, but I know the R.E. pundits would have something to say, so we give ‘em both credit. Could you imagine going to N.Y. in Madison Square Garden and having the entire audience chant “Wind me up Jay-Z”? I didn’t think so.
17.) 5 o’clock In The Morning by Nonchalant- Loved this song, again, couldn’t name her follow-up single but all I know this joint cranked, especially those dudes that were on this joint with her. What was their group name again? Anyway, I’d rather be a one-hit-wonder than a no-hit-wonder.

nonchalant Da DMV

18.) In the Pocket by Tabi Bonney- A relative newcomer out of northeast DC, Tabey Boney was getting national play on a bunch of outlets with this release. Love the video, by the way. I saw something else from Tabey briefly then it went away. But anybody who loves Go-Go can appreciate a good pocket.
19.) Welcome to DC by Mambo Sauce- Hey, they were playing this song at the Nationals’ stadium, you know that gets love. Video is decent, but for as good a song this is, the band has got to do more for it to get more notoriety.
20.) The District by Dark Alley- If you don’t know about these boys, you better ask somebody. Scour your underground outlets and find a copy of this single. It just screams DC.
Just Out of the Mix:
DC Lottery Commercial (Rolling Cash Five) by Chuck Brown- Ha! It’s only a commercial but if you don’t realize this joint crank, then you are a bama. This just shows why the Godfather is the Godfather!
Welcome to DC by Tree Gotti- I know you are saying, “Who?” But doing a little research, I found them on YouTube and figured it was worth a mention. Go see for yourself then report back to DLR.
That’s it…That’s the list…Let DLR know what you have in your “DC Soundtrack” playlist. And maybe you can take the title of “The iPod King.”

Top 5 Annual Outdoor Events in the DMV

From the Desk of Mr. Lucrack

DLR Likes to get out and about around town. If you are new to the area or just dont get out that much let this be your guide to whats going down in the DMV. Most of the events are free, and the entertainment is great!

1.) Howard Homecoming- One of the premier annual events in the fall on the east coast. Granted many will argue the late night parties are where its at during this event, where up and coming artists along side established veterans in the game can be seen out on the town enjoying the festivities as well as hitting the stage and performing their latest hits. You can enjoy yourself at Howard Homecoming around campus before and after the game….You definitely will encounter future DLR furniture saleswomen at this event.

2.) Stone Soul Picnic- This event held in RFK parking lot (former home of the mighty mighty Redskins) always has great acts, you can usually expect Chuck Brown to be in the spot…This free event attracts young and old alike. Great for the family and of course the eye candy is plentiful.

3.) Unifest- Held in the heart of Anacostia is also a free event, good acts. Think I saw BYB one year, generally Unifest will have an up and coming band which is always good too. And the SE ass is all over the place Good LAWD! (Sorry ladies but this will be a recurring theme).

4.) Georgia Ave Day- How could it be so free? More of a parade than anything, which is cool if you like that sort of thing. GA ave day usually has bands at Banneker, marred by violence some years ago, I still would have no problem attending. You will Definitely encounter future candidates to be featured in the Red Beans and Rice Pic of the week.

5.) SKINS/COWGIRLS Tailgating- Especially if its a Primetime game. Although I cant stand them Cowgirl fans, its still a good time to get with all the other Skins fans and re-live the glory years (Geez!)…….Come on Skins!

There it is….So in the words of the baddest most talented favorite rap group “You need to get up get out and get something….”

Top 10 DMV Clothing Lines

From the Desk of Mr. Lucrack

162110 Da DMV
JUAN5 Da DMV

From the desk of Mr Lucrack:
Da Locker Room is delving into the world of fashion. Here is our list of the 10 top clothing lines all time in the DMV. Mr. Blackwell, eat your heart out.

1.) Madness Connection/Universal Madness- Going back to the hats that put them on the map in the 80’s and providing the consumer the ability to put their unique stamp on their gear with letters and numbers, Madness has kept the DMV laced for almost 25 years.

2.) HOBO – Helping Our Brothers Out - HOBO keeps the big guy lookin sharp. Or just a guy that likes big boy clothes. Here too you could put your own “uniqueness” on your gear.

3.) We R One- Seen as an “uptown” thing by most We R One marketed their sun symbol (some say it resembles versace) to the DMV while at the same time keeping high profile athletes laced in the newest and latest “One” gear. Big G aka Slim Charles stayed laced in his “One” during his first season on The Wire. (remember when Backyard only wore madness?) Not having a store in DC may hurt their presence…..Come back to DC!

4.) Solbiato- Relatively new to the scene Solbiato has become a hot item. Being a pricey propostion may be half the allure, but if you want to impress that new shorty, it may be worth the trip to Georgetown.

5.)All Daz- From a small store front in the heart of DC, All Daz has been at the front of the clothing circuit in style and quality gear. All Daz has also been on the national scene, lacing boxer Paul Williams in its duds. Good Look All Daz.

6.) DDTP- Designer Discounters Trading Post- This line was hot hot hot in the early 90’s then poof – like a blunt around Lil Wayne -they were gone. A lot of people believe DDTP “jumped the shark” going nationwide and appearing in Up Against the Wall losing its credibility as a “DC” fasion. But DLR cant hate on any body going out there and getting that Scrilla……

7.) Shooters- Classic DC style. Shooters been around for a minute but somtimes one has to wonder if they could do more…DLR will be on the lookout for hot shooters gear this summer.

8.) Planet Chocolate City- The name says it all. Originally located near 8th & H NE, then moving uptown on Georgia Ave. near Madness, now closed. This line would get you looking right. The selection was most times slim but if you hit them on the right day you could definitely find something good and they also had the option of adding your own swag. Everywhere I go I get compliments on the Chocolate City gear I have.

9.) Squares- Shout out to Uptown they definitely have an edge when it comes to the gear. Squares like Shooters you definitely wondered if they could do more. Squares does have staying power, looking for more from them in the future also.

10.) YOU- Thats right the whole DMV- if you have ever sat at home and cut up a pair of jeans, a shirt, made a hat out of a shirt or out of a pair a jeans, used fabric to make an item of clothing that a normal person with less of an imagination would have never thought of. This goes out to you. Keep your Swag on a 100 DMV.DMV definitely have a style all their own. You could almost spot a cat from DC anywhere in the world from their gear alone. Keep doing it DMV and support your local businesses.

Honorable Mention: Abstracts, Ghetto Hills, Citywide, Citylife, Clockwise, Mchunu

Editors Note: DLR is not above accepting Ummmm product to analyze and review the quality…..so ummm…email DLR for mailing address if needed.

Top 10 DMV Hood Games

ashylarry1 Da DMV

FROM THE DESK OF MR. LUCRACK
Da Locker Room was debating, what were/is the most played and most fun games growing up in the hood….Even though we still play a lot of these games as adults (video games excluded). After much discussion, this is what we came up with.

1. Craps- Much like that scene on Roscoe Jenkins a friendly dice game usually ends with someone being upset or a flat out fight….Remember only gamble what you can afford to lose.

2. Tonk- Great card game if craps is too fast for you. In the DMV you learn this game the week after you learn UNO. A lot of guys either ate good or starved in high school because of this game.
3. Spades- One of the best social games there is. Can be played at the family cookout with Grandma, Grandpa and Auntie as well as at a cookout amongst friends, and when that fine shawty you have had your eye on asks the room for a partner it never hurts to step up but you better bring your A game if you plan on taking things further. (in other words dont get caught reniging)
4. 33 (21 for you suburban dudes)- Got an odd number of players on the b-ball court? Or no one wants to team up with the sorry dude. “33″ was the game to play. “33″ teaches young kids the importance of rebounding, foul shooting and boxing out. (O.K. maybe a stretch but still a fun game none the less.

5. Dominoes- Personally not a big fan of this game not really any good but a lot of guys in DLR like it so it made the list.
6. Slap Boxing/Going to the Body- Growing up if you backed down from a slap boxing or going to the body challenge could affect the way you are viewed quite possibly for the rest of your life amongst the fellas. This much like craps will usually end in someone feelings getting hurt or an all out fight.
7. Bidwhist (for the old heads)- Not too many in the DLR age range play this game mainly because of the popularity of Spades. Viewed by those who play as a more strategic game than spades thus requiring more skill to play and played by better card players. I like this game more than spades but scoring is more difficult than spades and not enogh people play.
8. Throw Back Tackle- An elementary school favorite. Too few or too many players for an organized game or not enough time this was the game. It literally is every man for himself. Cutthroat football. (rumor has it Barry Sanders was a star @ this game growing up)
9. _ on _ (insert your number) Street Football- Ususally impromptu. Only takes a football maybe some alcohol and a “You couldnt cover me in HS or now” comment and its on. (a “spotter” is recommended to warn of on coming cars you know how long the ER takes plus the one with no insurance usually gets hit so they will have that limp for the rest of their life)
10. Hide n Go Get it- I think this is the only MANDATORY CO-ED GAME on this list a derivitive of Hide n Go seek except if you found the person you were looking for it was all good. Usually played between the hours of “My parents are @ work”)
Honorable Mention: Truth or Dare
What was your favorite? What did we leave out?

There is this guy I saw a few times perform named Vince Barnett. The guy is straight funny and what I liked about him is that he did not cuss. His set was tight and the entire club was laughing from the moment he grabbed the mic until he got off stage. He reminded me of a combination of Chris Rock and Chappelle with a dash of Seinfeld. He definitely should be in the top 10 although not as well known as the other guys. He’s a smart comic and I know he’s funny because my wife loves him.

Lazee Lamont Steps into Da Locker Room: Part 1

Lazee Da DMVDmv’s own Lazee Lamont (Comedy Central, National Lampoon, BET’s Comic View, The Eavesdrop on XM 67 The City) will be back home this weekend performing (see flyer to right) so DLR wanted to holla at him about his thoughts on his journey and his views on life.

Man I see you hustlin and grindin everywhere…how the hell you get the name Lazee?

That’s funny, people always ask me that. I used to have a snappy response like “Well its like when you call a fat man ’slim,’ or a tall dude ’shorty,’ its like that kinda.” But nowadays when I reflect on how far I have come I just tell people the story straight up. 10 years ago when I was a volunteer with WKYS I would have to show up for the morning show to answer phones at 6am, many times after having just left the building at 2am. Long story short, Supaken (already a made-man at KYS by then) used to be like “Lamont, why you always late. You are lazy. I’mma start callin’ you Lazy Lamont.” It kinda caught on and it stuck. They had no idea that I was walking to work many mornings and many times I was actually asleep on the floor in the other room because I didn’t (couldn’t) go home. I say couldn’t because my parents weren’t really happy about me recently leaving college and then volunteering at a radio station, so if I wasn’t home before the news went off, pops locked the door…and they took my housekey. I later embraced the ‘Lazee’ tag and made it work for me since I have such a nonchalant personality anyways.
I’m very conscious about it. In fact I’m having the trickiest time re-establishing my brand. When I left the morning show 4 years ago I wanted to start using my birth name Lamont King, but it was very difficult in the beginning. I had been with WKYS for almost 7 years and with the nationally syndicated Russ Parr Morning Show for nearly 5. It seems like everywhere I went across the country people would make me from the show. Branding is important in any industry. I am a product and I have to constantly market myself to the consumer. Good brand recognition is half of that battle. For me, these days, it depends on where I am at and what I am doing that determines how I introduce or announce myself. The shit is tricky. When I first got out to LA and was working on the radio with John Salley and his morning show, he was like “these rich jews out here don’t write nicknames on checks.” That was sort of an industry wake-up for me, so in business settings I’m always Lamont King first. Plus I absolutely hate saying “I’m Lazee Lamont” in a room full of white folx!

I heard its like an unspoken competition out in L.A. amongst comics from different areas. Is that true? If so, how would you rank the top 3 cities of funny mofos?

There is comp in every aspect of every career. Especially these days. Times is tight, the oppurtunities aren’t as plentiful for Black actors and comedians like there used to be. So people aren’t as likely to extend a helping hand like back in the day. I have dealt with some shady individuals in my short 3 years out in L.A. You wouldn’t believ the stories I could tell. But on the other hand this is the big leagues, so go hard or go home, you know. This Broadway, not the arena stage. This is the Oscars, this aint the Hoodies. Play or get off the field. I have actually made this observation to myself on many occasions growing up watching comedians and then working around them as one, but I would definitely have to say Chicago, DC, and NY, with St. Louis a close 4th. I put Chicago in front of DC only because of the sheer number of heavy hitters and legends that have come out of the CHI and are still doing it. DC has a specific rep about everything it produces and comedy is no different. People always like to brand DC in a certain category. “Oh you from DC? I bet you like to jone on niggas. Ya’ll stay jonin.’ Ya’ll still listen to that Go-Go out there?!” DC definitely gets respect in the comedy world out here but Chicago IMO edges us out just by volume. But damn that our comedy legends are all known on a first name basis! Tommy, Martin, Wanda, Dave, Quake, Redd, Joe etc
Sheeeeeit thats just about everybody! As long as you got a small role in a movie thats out or in a commercial, bammas will hit you with the changeup in a heartbeat. Everybody is always “working on” something. Most of these cats wasn’t much in the hometown so they get a few breaks in the business in Hollywood, and they are a star. I feel like I got decent love around the way so that type of status don’t really phase me. I’m not mad at nobody though, you only live once. But some of them do be tripping and have had to check a couple. You know them types, see you standing by yourself and won’t speak to you, but let you be standing with somebody they want to know and they start acting like ya’ll talk on the phone everyday.
Check back into Da Locker Room tomorrow for Part 2.

Lazee Lamont Steps Into Da Locker Room: Part 2

Lazee Da DMVDmv’s own Lazee Lamont (Comedy Central, National Lampoon, BET’s Comic View, The Eavesdrop on XM 67 The City) will be back home this weekend performing (see flyer to right) so DLR wanted to holla at him about his thoughts on his journey and his views on life.

Now that you live in Lala land, has it changed your perception of silicone?

I have never really felt fake ta-tas….well i have felt them but I have never really been a fan of them……I still am not. i like the natural joints.

Has your agent ever tried to get you work in the porn industry? I heard they give great “raises”.

I turned down roles in Skeet The Parents, Friday Night Dykes, and The Little Furmaid. I told them my part wasn’t big enough….my part in the movie that is.

I told them I would get back to them about HandCock *No Homo*

Who’s the baddest (aka phattest) celebrity you seen out in L.A.?

I just was at an event with Vida Guerra last Thursday. Hmmm let me see. I would have to say the video girls, and the groupies that go to the clubs be lookin more vicious then the celebs though. I done been on video shoots wif straight fire donkeys. And people go to the comedy clubs here like they go to the club at home so I done seen a rack of the porno chicks up in the comedy club. Claudia Jordan is pretty tuff in person. Lauren London is blaze. Uhhh Angell Conwell is a stallion. Oh yeah, and I did a movie last year with MYA and Melyssa Ford and they are both the truth!

Do you think republicans are really that stupid or do they just think that everyone else is that stupid?

I think they don’t care. Stupidity comes in many forms, but I think they genuinely don’t care about people of color and the working poor in this country. We are not on their agenda and they will do anything necessary to protect their so-called ’standard of living.’ Picking Palin was a straight tabloid move. It was dumb but might actually work, becuase America has become a tabloid society that is stuck on stupid anyway. He coulda picked New York from flavor of love and prolly got the black and woman vote away from Obama. We are all asleep at the wheel anyway. Sheep. I almost dont want Obama to win because he gon have an impossible job tryna fixing shit.

Do you think Palins daughter is about to have her first or second baby?

That baby is every bit Palin’s 2nd granddaughter and I can’t wait til that info comes out. The whole thing is a charade. i can’t wait for it to get exposed. Bristol look like a freak anyway. You seen them hooters? The ice hockey team at her high school prolly done all ran up and through that igloo!

Do you think that its time for Obama to have a nukka moment to get his point across during the debates?

I dont even think he has to to be honest. All he has to do is be firm and factual like he has been and I think McCane will fall all over himself they way he has been already. McCane is a ‘true P.O.W’ a Pasty Old Whiteman.

So what kind of topics can the crowd expect to hear from you on Saturday?

Aw man, i’mma touch on quite a bit. I got a lot of new stuff, and my old stuff is new if you have never seen me on stage. Of course, politics, marriage, people, current events, n*gga shit and my favorite–head. The Instant Classic is another one of my branded events that has grown in popularity and puts on display some of the hottest up and coming talent in the area. Its our 4th Comedy & Variety Show that does comedy & variety unlike anybody else is doing. The last three were off the hook and IC4 will be no different. We got Eddie Bryant (1st Ammendment, Comic View: One Mic Stand), Ayanna Dookie (DC Comedy festival, NY Underground Comedy Festival), Tray Chaney (HBO’s The Wire), Damo, & Bassey (Def Poetry Jam) among several others coming through. Eats, open bar, DJ, sexy and mature clientele. Its gon be crazy. I must tell you though that YOU CAN NOT GET TIX AT THE DOOR, you must RSVP at www.kevintparker.com/classic come thru!

Whatelse is on the horizon for you in 2008/2009?

I plan on getting my hands in as many projects as possible to further build my brand. You can listen to me every week co-hosting a Talk-show on XM 67 The City called The Eavesdrop, I did two movies with Russ Parr that you will be seeing soon (Something Like A Business / Love For Sale), I plan to get more standup comedy work on the road at clubs and colleges nationwide, I want heavyset cats to start rockin my Husky Swag apparel and I will continue to rep the DMV wherever I go. I want the people to know what time it is whenever you see Lamont King, or Lazee Lamont, or THINKERTAINMENT! on anything!!! Join my e-list and keep track of me at www.lamontking.tv

lizz+5 Da DMV
lizz+6 Da DMV
lizz+4 Da DMV
DMV’s own Lizz Robbins has stepped into Da Locker Room to talk about the thing we love most about her…herself! Just in case you don’t know much about Lizz here’s a quick rundown. Lizz has been featured in King Magazine and calendar as there first Webgirl of the Year as well as writing a blog on there website. She is also the Remy Martin Spokemodel and will be featured in their 2008 Calendar. And on top of that she is the commissioner of her own fantasy football league (talk about a fantasy) while holding down a full-time government job while aspiring to be an actress. The bottom line is no slackers need apply for Lizz’s time. So without further adieu, here are a few random questions from DLR to Lizz.
  • South Beach or Southeast? I love DC, but I have to go with South Beach
  • Ben’s Chili Bowl or Florida Ave. Grill? Ben’s Chili Bowl hands down! It’s historic
  • National Harbor or Baltimore Harbor? Baltimore Harbor
  • Grey Goose or Belvedere? Neither, not into vodka, Remy’s pretty good (lol)
  • Ketchup or mumbo sauce? Mumbo Sauce
  • Slow lane or fast lane? Slow Lane, whatever you’re trying to get to will be there if it’s worth it
  • Hybrid or Suv? Hybrid, I’m all about saving natural energy resources
  • Hillary Clinton or Clinton Portis? Clinton Portis, since he plays for the Redskins
  • Redskins or Cowboys? See above. Hail to the Redskins!
  • Nationals or Orioles? I have been an Orioles fan forever, but I support the Nats, since they are in the NL
  • Fantasy football or real football? Ahhh, tough one, I have to say both, nothing like being at a real football game, and nothing like being able to choose your own team
  • Deshawn or Lebron? I drink Sprite so I have to go with Lebron LOL
  • Kanyeezy or Weezy? Weezy is hot right now, but I’m feeling Kanyeezy a little more
  • Tupac or Biggie? Tupac hands down
  • Alicia or Beyonce? I have to go with Alicia, but for all around performance I would go with Beyonce
  • Kappa’s or Q’s? I have to give love to all of the Divine Nine, we all are brothers and sisters
  • Theater or DVD? DVD, a better value
  • Heels or Sneaks? Both, I love to dress up, I also love to comfortable
  • Louie or Gucci? Neither, not really into name brands

(Now the answers DLR really want to know…lol)

  • Top or bottom? I wear tops and bottoms (you’re dealing with a woman who’s had media training LOL)
  • Pajamas or birthday suit? Jammies! I have some cute Betty Boop jammies!
  • Fast or Slow? Depends on the ride (no pun intended lol)
  • Smooth or Rough? I prefer smooth surfaces
  • Shave or graze? In the summer time it’s better to shave, but I prefer waxing
  • Da Locker Room (us) or Surgery? Da Locker Room of course!!!! Y’all have one of the hottest blogs (next to mine lol).

If you want to know more about Lizz (I know yall do), you can check her out on her website or myspace page.

  • Shout out to Lizz’s parents and her AKA sorors for producing such a fine woman! Lol. Thanks for the love Lizz.
